Om Shanti Om is a 2007 Indian Hindi-language romantic melodrama film directed by Farah Khan. The film features Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Arjun Rampal in lead roles. Shreyas Talpade and Kirron Kher play supporting roles. The film focuses on Om Prakash Makhija (Khan), an aspiring junior artist of 1970s Hindi cinema who has a crush on Shantipriya (Padukone), a secretly married superstar. Her husband Mukesh Mehra (Rampal), an ambitious producer, kills his pregnant wife in a fire to fuel his career; Om dies shortly herafter during his futile attempts to rescue Shantipriya. He is reincarnated as Om Kapoor, an actor and upon recovering his memory years later, plans to make Mukesh confess his misdeeds. The film's dialogues were written by Mayur Puri, while Farah drafted the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Mushtaq Sheikh. The film was produced by Gauri Khan under the banner Red Chillies Entertainment. The soundtrack was composed by Vishal-Shekhar, while Javed Akhtar wrote the lyrics for its songs. The cinematography was handled by V. Manikandan, while the sound design and art direction were handled by Nakul Kamte and Sabu Cyril respectively. Produced on a budget of ₹400 million, Om Shanti Om released on 9 November 2007 to positive reviews. It was commercially successful, grossing over ₹1.49 billion worldwide to become the highest grossing Indian film at that point, overtaking the previous record held by Dhoom 2. The film won 26 awards from 72 nominations; its music and cinematography have received the most attention from award groups. At the 55th National Film Awards, Sabu Cyril won for Best Production Design. Om Shanti Om received twelve nominations at the 53rd Filmfare Awards, including Best Film, Best Director (Farah), Best Actor (Shah Rukh) and Best Actress (Padukone). It ultimately won in 2 categories for Best Female Debut (Padukone) and Best Special Effects (Red Chillies VFX). The film won five awards out of twelve nominations at the 8th IIFA Awards for technical aspects. It garnered eleven nominations at the 5th Producers Guild Film Awards and won four, Best Female Debut (Padukone), Best Choreography (Farah), Best Costume Design (Karan Johar), and Best Special Effects (Red Chillies VFX). Among other wins, it received three Screen Awards, three Stardust Awards and five Zee Cine Awards.
